DVD Authoring: An Introduction

DVD Authoring is the process of collecting various content assets such as video, audio, photographs, subtitles, and menus, connecting them together and burning them to a master dvd disc.

The assets themselves are generated in a variety of applications such as video editing, post-production, image editing and subtitling. They are then compiled in a DVD authoring application such as Ulead DVD Movie Factory on the PC or DVD Studio Pro on the Mac. The process of authoring is very much like building a website. The menu screen on a DVD is analgous to the homepage of a website in that it contains links to all the content on the DVD.

Menu screens usually link to the main feature, chapters within the feature, additional scenes not contained in the feature, photographic slideshows, and additional audio content. The main menu screen can also contain links to sub- menus, which helps avoid cluttering the main menu with too many options.

In addition to setting up menu selections on the main menu, the DVD authoring application allows the producer to set-up additional features such as subtitles. Within the authoring application, each item is given the metaphor of a container. A container can hold any type of supported content and is linked to a menu selection, either on the main menu or a sub-menu.

DVD authoring applications also usually support the creation of multi-angle content (where viewers can decide to watch a different passage of video with the same soundtrack and subtitles) and Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound

Using this method it is very easy for even a comparitive novice to create a fairly sophisticated DVD disc with most of the features found on a commercial disc. Indeed the biggest challenge for the prospective DVD author is the aesthetic design itself. Getting all the bits to work properly is one thing, but making it look good and intuitive to use is another.

Once the content of the disc has been laid out in the authoring application, it is then previewed to make sure everything works properly. It is then 'multiplexed' (the content is linked together) and the master disc can be burned.

It's worth noting that the affordable DVD writers and authoring applications only support writing to DVD for General media which doesn't have the necessary lead-in tracks required by mass duplicators. Therefore this type os solution is not really suitable for producing DVDs which need to be mass-duplicated.

Why Worry

The possibility of almost 400 Old Testament prophesies coming to fulfillment in the incarnation of Jesus Christ, apart from God's sovereign control of history, staggers the imagination. The certainty that God planned the coming of His son into the world can offer stabilizing support to our faith in our Lord.

We are living in a day of apprehension which offers nothing certain for us to hang onto. Foundations are crumbling, absolutes are quivering, old truths are ignored. The Christian can turn to the pages of his Bible and discover that prophecy can steady the faith which is so easily shaken if we allow our spiritual vision to lower only to the uncertain things of this world.

The story of the birth of Jesus in the first two chapters of Matthew's Gospel is not all snowflakes and fuzzy little lambs and starlight and singing angels. Typical of God's working in man, human anguish is followed by divine promise.

Joseph was shocked when his fiancee told him she was pregnant. While he was in this state of consternation, an angel appeared to Joseph with the simple counsel to stop worrying. Joseph wasn't thinking objectively. He needed to look at his problem from God's perspective. The angel gave Joseph his bearings by reminding him of prophetic truth. As with Joseph, we can gain a new perspective on life and problems when we understand what God foretold to His people about the coming of His Son into the world.

No other person in all of history has had so many prophecies ascribed to Him as Jesus Christ. From Genesis to Malachi the pages carry details about Him that attest to the supernatural character of both Jesus and the Bible.

In this article we will comment briefly on only a few prophesies of His earthly sojourn.

A Sign for Ahaz

The angel's message to Joseph, recorded in Matthew 1:23, is a quotation the angel took from Isaiah 7:14--"'Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and His name shall be called Emmanuel' (which means, God with us)."

The point of the quotation was that a virgin was to give birth to the Messiah. The word virgin is an unqualified term (parthenos). This is what allayed Joseph's fears--his fiancee was still a virgin!

The occasion for the miracle described by Isaiah was a threat to Judah's King Ahaz by an alliance between Israel and Syria. These two kingdoms wanted to replace Ahaz with another king.

In an earlier attack on Jerusalem Isaiah had tried to assure Ahaz that the invasion would fail and that he should rely on God to help Judah. Instead, Ahaz made what he thought was a master stroke of genius. He fashioned a diplomatic arrangement with Assyria to help him.

Isaiah tried to tell Ahaz to trust. "If you will not believe, surely you shall not be established" (7:9). In the Hebrew this is a play on words. The words "believe" and "established" are from the same root. The idea is that faith strengthens the reality of God's care for oneself.

In verse 11 Isaiah challenged Ahaz to go deep and let the sky be the limit in asking something unlimited and unrestricted from God: "Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven."

Ahaz refused to believe. Instead he let go with a pious platitude which he thought quite profound: "I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test" (7:12). Actually, this reply was a facade to cover his cowardly unbelief. Ahaz couldn't care less whether this pleased God or not. He was afraid to ask for a sign lest it not come to pass. He tried to hide his unbelief. Ahaz had already stripped the Temple treasury to bribe the king of Assyria.

God then countered with a sign of such a nature that men would not have thought it possible to come to pass: "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel" (7:14). The sign was given to rebuke Ahaz in his continual unbelief.

Note the contrast between Joseph and Ahaz. Joseph accepted the promise, a source of comfort in his trial. Ahaz rejected the promise. The difference was their confidence (and lack of it) in God. Denial of God led to the ruin of Ahaz. Assyria responded with an invasion into Israel and Syria, and after defeating them, turned on Judah. Thirty-seven years of servitude followed.

The miraculous sign was not only a warning to Ahaz, but it was directed against the whole Davidic family (7:13). Ahaz and his family and nation would suffer extreme punishment from God. "The Lord will bring upon you and upon your house such days as have not come since the day that Ephraim departed from Judah" (7:17).

The Message to Daniel

The prophet Daniel is another believer who found his bearings because of a prophetic announcement. Daniel lived in troubled times; his people were in exile in Babylon. After about 70 years of bondage in a foreign land, Daniel read the prophecy of Jeremiah. He was startled to find that Jeremiah had prophesied Israel's captivity (25:11-12; 29:10-14). Moreover, he discovered Israel would return to Palestine at the end of 70 years! Revival came into Daniel's life. He recorded his confession in the book that bears his name (9:3-19).

At the end of the chapter Daniel tells about his "seventy sevens" vision--a prediction of the time of the first coming of Christ. God had a comprehensive plan for Israel--"Seventy weeks of years are decreed concerning your people and your holy city" (9:24). These sevens are years. Seventy weeks are 490 years. Daniel received encouragement and certainty from this vision. After the privations of the captivity, God was bringing Israel home, and Daniel received hope.

Daniel prophesies the number of years that would pass before the Messiah would come. From the issuance of the decree to rebuild Jerusalem until the coming of the Messiah would be seven sevens (49 years) plus 62 sevens (434 years), or a total of 483 years. The decree to rebuild Jerusalem came in 445 B.C. Christ's crucifixion about 30 A.D. allows for the fulfillment of the prophecy in the prescribed time. Of all the outstanding religious teachers Judaism has had, Christ is the only One who could possibly fulfill Daniel's prophecy. (One seven-year period remains--the seven-year tribulation period yet to come.)

Thus in a time when Daniel and his people were harassed and troubled by their captives in a strange land, the prophet could find strength in God's promise of the coming Messiah.

Other passages give more details of the incarnation. Micah 5:2, for example, designates the place of the Messiah's birth. About 700 B.C. Micah specified that of the 12 provinces of the land of Israel, Jesus would be born in Judah. Micah even went so far as to say that the small village of Bethlehem would be the place of the birth of the Son of God. Micah used Hebrew terminology in this verse to make the strongest possible statement about His eternity: "Whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting" (ASV).

With the many precise and unmistakable prophesies of Christ's coming, we wonder why He was not received more warmly. But "He came to His own home, and His own people received Him not" (John 1:11). The Jews couldn't believe in Christ and they couldn't accept the testimony of their own Scriptures. The two areas of unbelief go hand in hand.

What kind of God do you have? Can your God dispel anxiety and worry? Is your God worthy of your faith and trust? Can you believe His promises so thoroughly that you can trust him for the future? The God of incontrovertible prophetic declarations can be the God of your day-by-day life. And His personal promises to you focus in the central concern of those prophesies--Jesus Christ, His Son.

Anxiety and worry are essentially distrust in God. They are characteristics of the godless. We believers in Christ know what God is like--He provides for our needs.

Jesus said, "Tomorrow will be anxious for itself" (Matt. 6:34). Each day that passes nearly always proves that the anxiety of the previous day was unnecessary. Why ask for double trouble? Why worry about tomorrow? One day's trouble is heavy enough. If I add tomorrow's trouble on today's, I double my trouble.

To enter a state of apprehension and anxiety by anticipating the future's problems is to reject the idea that God has everything in control. We know God can give us bearings for today and tomorrow because He proved it with Ahaz and Daniel.

Lazy Man?s Way To Get Customers

No matter how big or small your business is and no matter how high or low sales are right now, there is something you need, badly. And that is a selling system.

All firms are careful to have elaborate accounting, production and transport systems. And yet there is no system to handle the most important aspect of all ? sales.

Nothing moves until a sale is made, remember?

Systems makes work easier. A selling system guarantees any business a steady flow of new and repeat customers. The introduction of a selling system has changed fortunes, literally overnight. Sample these brief case studies;

A struggling monthly magazine was on the verge of shutting down when they took on a consultant who introduced a simple system to sell advertising space (the main source of revenue for the business magazine.) Within 2 months, the magazine was turning a profit and within one year sales increased by over 500%.

In the mid eighties nobody believed it was possible to sell computers in cash-strapped Africa. People not only didn't know how to use them but even if they did where would they find the cash? The result was that computer dealers sold very few computers, mostly to large companies, at obscenely high profit margins. A new company entered the market with a simple selling system that involved packaging a low cost entry-point computer. They sold so well that they revolutionized the entire market forcing margins to come down dramatically.

A well-established energy firm specializing in solar was doing very well but wanted to do even better. They reluctantly hired a consultant, more out of curiosity because they did not believe what he was saying about selling systems. The consultant quickly discovered that the real "hot button" for solar consumers was being able to run a Television. He thus created a selling system that linked solar to the most popular soap in the country at the time. Sales increased by over 50% in a single month.

This restaurant had good d?cor and excellent food. But it was located in a good but out-of-the-way street. Too much had already been invested to shift location so they tried out a selling system involving a discount voucher for lunch targeted at office workers. Two days later, the restaurant was so packed that several customers just gave up and went elsewhere.

A struggling newspaper could hardly sell its' minimal 1,000 copies print run. A selling system was set up to distribute the publication using flyers. Sales shot up to 120,000 copies within a very short time.

The examples are endless. As the world marketplace is continually shrunk by technology and as competition increases, businesses will find it more and more difficult to survive without an effective selling system that clearly lays out a strategy and procedure to attract leads and prospects and to then to turn some of those leads into paying customers.

Managers: Get Real, Please!

Personnel mentions in the newspaper and product plugs on radio hardly qualify as an adequate return on your public relations dollar, and you probably know it!

Especially unfortunate when your PR budget could be doing something really positive about the behaviors of those outside audiences that most affect your business, non-profit or association.

And also when it could be delivering external stakeholder behavior change ? the kind that leads directly to achieving your managerial objectives.

And, finally, when you could be persuading those important outside folks to your way of thinking, then move them to take actions that help your department, division or subsidiary succeed.

On the other hand, if all you want is a simple publicity effort, fine. But if you want full-bore public relations performance like that above ? performance that really contributes to your success as a manager ? here's a blueprint that will start you on your way.

"People act on their own perception of the facts before them, which leads to predictable behaviors about which something can be done. When we create, change or reinforce that opinion by reaching, persuading and moving-to-desired-action the very people whose behaviors affect the organization the most, the public relations mission is accomplished."

What can you expect from such a blueprint? How about heavy-hitter givers eyeing your 501-C-3; newly interested specifying sources asking you for more data; qualified proposals for strategic alliances and joint ventures; prospects showing new interest; growing numbers of requests for membership applications; repeat purchases reappearing; political leaders taking a closer look at your unit as a key member of the business, non-profit or association communities; a delightful jump in sales floor visits; and even community leaders seeking you out.

If you're a business, non-profit or association manager, you need to take two steps as soon as possible. First, jot down those outside audiences of yours whose behavior helps or hinders you in pursuing your objectives. Then record them according to how severe their impact is, and let's look at the target audience that shows up in first place.

While you probably would have assembled the required data if such activity enjoyed a priority in your shop, fact is you probably haven't gathered the information that tells you what most members of that key outside audience think about your organization. But now, in the absence of a large professional survey budget, you and your colleagues will have to monitor external audience by asking the questions yourselves. questions like "Have you ever met anyone from our organization? Was it a satisfactory experience? How much do you know about our services or products?" Look for negative statements, especially evasive or hesitant replies. And be on the lookout for false assumptions, untruths, misconceptions, inaccuracies and potentially damaging rumors. You'll need to correct any that you come across because experience shows they usually result in negative behaviors.

With the aim of correcting such aberrations before they become hurtful behaviors, here you select the specific perception to be altered. You have now identified your public relations goal.

However, my friend, a PR goal without a strategy to show you how to get there, is like Quesadillas without fried onions and mushrooms. That's why you must select one of three strategies especially designed to create perception or opinion where there may be none, change existing perception, or reinforce it. But be careful that your new goal and the new strategy match each other. After all, you wouldn't want to select "change existing perception" when you have a good current perception suggesting a "reinforce" strategy.

Enter writing talent. Here your PR team must put those writing skills to work and prepare a compelling message. One structured to alter your key target audience's perception, as called for by your public relations goal.

Here's a good idea -- combine your fixit message with another newsworthy announcement ? or include it in a different presentation -- thus lending credibility by downplaying the fact that you're correcting something.

Still, your corrective message must be clear about what perception needs clarification or correction and why. The message must be truthful and your position must be persuasive, logically explained and believable. It is the best way to hold the attention of members of that target audience, and actually move perception your way.

Picking the tools you will count on to carry your persuasive new thoughts to the attention of that external audience (I call such tactics "beasts of burden") will be the easiest part of your campaign.

There is an endless selection of communications tactics available such as group briefings, letters-to-the-editor, brochures, press releases and personal contacts. Or possibly, radio and newspaper interviews, speeches, newsletters, and many others. But again, be cautious about the tactics you select. Can they demonstrate a record of reaching the same people as those you call your target stakeholders?

Undoubtedly, the question of progress will come up. And you'll want to be ready for such queries by again monitoring perceptions among your target audience members. But there's a big difference the second time around. Using questions similar to those used during your earlier monitoring session, you mow will be on the alert for indications that audience perceptions are beginning to move in your direction. Fortunately for you and I, that means progress.

Once again, we are fortunate in the PR business that we can move almost any program along at a faster rate by using additional communications tactics, AND by increasing their frequencies.

Two final pieces of advice. Keep your attention focused sharply on the very groups of outside people ? your key external stakeholders -- who play such a major role in just how successful a manager you will be.

And use a workable blueprint such as that outlined at the beginning of this article. In other words, a plan that helps you persuade those important outside stakeholders to your way of thinking, then moves them to take actions that lead to the success of your department, division or subsidiary.

Develop Your Childs Genius: The King of Games - the Game of Kings

Many people still think that the game of chess is appropriate for old people. In their mind's eye, they see 2 elderly people sitting across from each other in the park, playing a game of chess.

Well, it might sound surprising to you, but you can teach a baby to play chess. It has shown to be extremely beneficial for children of all ages to learn to play chess, and in addition, it is very entertaining. It is impossible to describe how much value a child gets from playing chess.

When my son Eric was about 2 or 3, he showed interest in board games, so I asked my husband if he knew how to play chess. I didn't know how to play Chess at the time, but luckily my husband knew the basics, and volunteered to teach little Eric. Eric took to it immediately. One day, my husband and I walked into a computer store, to buy a piece of hardware, and in the back room, we saw a person sitting in front of the computer, playing Chess. We started a conversation with him, and found out that he was a Chess teacher. When we came home, we asked Eric if he would like us to find a teacher for him, and he was very excited about it.

After some looking around and making some phone calls (now I know exactly who to call and where to look) we found a new immigrant from Russia who was a gifted Chess teacher. Some of his students became very famous grandmasters. So we made an appointment with the teacher, and he played a game of Chess with our baby. He looked at us after the game and said, a little bit amazed: "he is making all the right moves, it is amazing". Eric was 4 at the time, and the teacher took him on as a student.

Since then, Chess has been a part of our life. Chess has enriched our lives a great deal. Thanks to Chess, we have traveled and seen some parts of the world and the country we would have never traveled to otherwise. Whenever we visited a new place, we always looked for a street corner or a coffee house where people play chess, and always met interesting people and made new friends. There is always something new to learn, and avid players spend a significant amount of time learning and practicing. Many people find enjoyment in participating in tournaments.

All over the country there are many chess clubs that encourage the participation of children, and many scholastic tournaments are taking place all over the country. Players of all skill levels are encouraged to play in tournaments, and players of similar skill levels are paired to play with each other.

What will your child learn from playing Chess?

- He will learn how to put together a plan, and follow up on it.

- He will learn to calculate a few moves ahead of time, based on memory and imagination.

- He will learn how to concentrate.

- He will learn the difference between strategy and tactics.

- He will learn to think before he acts. That every move has consequences.

- He will learn to play fair and to be courteous.

- He will improve his visual memory and visual discrimination.

- He will learn how to follow the rules.

- He will learn to take responsibility.

- He will learn to have patience.

- He will develop his creativity.

There are so many more benefits to studying and playing chess, that you will have to discover for yourself.

When we started taking little Eric to a kids' Chess club, we met some kids that were highly gifted. I will never forget a little boy, 8 years old, who played a game of "blindfold" chess with the teacher, who was a master. "Blindfold" means that the player is not looking at the board, and has to play the game out of memory. The little boy played a whole game out of memory, and beat the master.

The most successful children were the ones who started very early. Children who had an older sibling who played Chess, or a parent who played Chess, and had the opportunity to watch the game when they were babies.

If you have a baby, if possible let the baby watch people playing Chess. Do you play Chess? Wonderful! Let the baby watch. If you do not play Chess, find a Chess club in your neighborhood, a park or a coffeehouse and let the baby watch the games as long as the baby is interested.

Some babies will be fascinated and watch the game for a long time, some will watch just for a few minutes. No problem! Let the baby watch as long as it wants. Even a few minutes will do. Do it as often as possible.

At home, have a Chess board around, and occasionally just show the baby the different pieces, and mention their names. Do it a few times a day. This is a good start for a baby, to get acquainted with the Chess pieces.

When your child is ready (and the parents know best!), you can show him how to move the pieces. A little bit a day will do. Make sure that the child spends some time around Chess players and gets the opportunity to watch some games.

For school age children, the best thing to do is to sit with them, explain the game and play with them. If you don't enjoy Chess or don't know how to play, you can find a teacher, or a Chess club that accommodates children.

Here is a special word about girls and Chess: some of the best chess players are girls! Just look at the sisters Polgar, and many other female chess players. If you have a girl, encourage her to play chess, it is a most beneficial activity for girls, as well as boys.

There are many Chess computer games on the market, starting from very affordable programs, like Chessmaster, and up to very expensive software and dedicated Chess computers. They are all fine, but remember - when your child plays with human beings, he learns much more and enjoys himself a lot more. It is a completely different experience. So take my advice, let your child play with other children, or even adults. Computer games can be a good addition.

Cell Phones - The New Media

Every day, there are more new uses for the classic cell phones. These days, people have come to the conclusion that they read their emails, pay their fees or play games with their friends and that they can do all these things through their cell phones. The basic function of a phone, even if it is a cell phone is that of a voice communication device. It is being quickly replaced with new options that attract people. We can use the cell phones as credit cards to buy products or services, read articles on the Internet or even take wonderful pictures.

The new improvements in the field and the constant developing of the technologies give cell phones the chance to offer highly attractive opportunities for their users. The use of cell phones globally brought them to the top position on the list of communication devices. The word "communication" has a new meaning. Nowadays technology allows cell phone users to explore their new applications at increased capacities.

The success of the Internet access using cell phones has reasons that include the main disadvantages of their competition, the personal computers. Unsecured Loans ? Substituting Secured Loans

Watching more and more people fall in the trap laid down by the secured loans, you resolved never to take debt help from the lending organisations. Nevertheless, as and when need arises, the lending organisations do have to be approached for help. With the many changes that have taken place in the lending scenario in the UK, you do not have secured loans as the only option available. Unsecured loans have made their mark as loans that are easily available from lenders at attractive rates and flexible terms.

With more and more people losing their homes to the lending organisations, the aversion to secured loans has grown. Unsecured loans have gained from this aversion to secured loans. These loans provide resources to the borrowers without requiring them to offer their homes as collateral. This frees up the equity in home to be used for other purposes.

The high rate of interest that is charged on these loans is admissible. By offering loans to people without any security, lenders are putting their funds to risk. The higher rate counter-weighs the higher degree of risk involved. Lenders however, make their assurances regarding the credit behaviour of the borrower through the borrower's bank, and other organisations with which the borrower deals.

A good credit history is a prerequisite for unsecured loans. A bad remark on the credit file may dither many lenders in the UK from offering loans to such borrowers. Lenders undertake credit scoring to be on the safer side. Credit scoring is the method through which lenders assess the credit worthiness of a borrower. The borrower is asked to answer a few questions in the application form. The answers to these questions form the basis of the points that are allotted to a borrower. If the mark obtained by a person is above the set mark, he is accepted for being offered unsecured loans.

If he fails to cross the mark, he may either not be offered the loan or may have to shell a higher amount in the form of interest. The borrower may not get the desired amount and have to make do with the smaller amount. However, this does not give a generalised view of all the lenders.
